Zelkova Bonsai Tree
Along with a ridiculously cool name, the Zelkova Bonsai Tree makes an excellent tree to grow as a Bonsai. This is because it has a pleasing wood style and the leaves look nice as well. They have much in similar with Elm trees however they don’t suffer from the same diseases which mean that the Zelkova can be used in places where Elms tend to get diseased.
The leaves are small and will turn from green to yellow to brown in the autumn time. This is a tree that in real life is used for fairly ornamental things.
This tree is a bit unique in the fact that it is very strong yet quite fragile. It’ll put up with a bit yet the branches are usually pretty fragile so you should be very gentle when wiring and handling this tree. Be careful with it!
The general style for this one is that of the informal upright. It’s an Asian tree and you might like to give the styling something like that. This tree will work with any styling, but I personally think that the informal upright with a good strong foliage looks best. It’s up to you though, make sure you get some Bonsai inspiration before beginning.
Wire this tree in the summer and give it strong fertilizer. In the Winter don’t let it dry out but don’t let the roots sit in water. That’s a bad idea and could cause your tree harm.
The Zelkova Tree is a great one to turn into a Bonsai. If you’re keen to use an Elm, this is a good variation on it and many Bonsai experts enjoy working with this type of tree. As always, check your climate and what you can offer the tree yourself. If you live in a cool, slightly damp (think ‘middling’) area of the world this could just be the perfect tree for you. Make sure that you ask the people at the nursery where you buy the tree for any pointers. And if they don’t stock the tree that means two things: they don’t have it, or it doesn’t work in your part of the world! Be sure to ask though.
This tree will survive frosts but a little protection will go a long way to ensuring that this tree looks wonderful. Lots of sun in the summer time will keep the leaves full and beautiful. Enjoy working with the Zelkova Bonsai Tree.
